Puppy Love (wordle # 133)

Ah, the love for small, miraculous creations!
She's so tiny one's impulse is to whisper.
I kneel before her and stare
at each little whisker and claw.
She toddles, bandy-legged
under the sofa, where,
lost and invisible in the shadows,
she emits small whimpers.
Outside, in the infinite grandness,
she follows me
smelling new smells
and licking dew off the leaves.
I see afresh
the beauty of the simple things,
close to the ground.
When she wanders off
I feel the distance between us
and the precarious nature of being,
and being cared for.
A tender balance, not precise.
No bigger than my two fists
her little spark lights my day.

(Infinite, hit, invisible, emits, rhythm, impulse, distance, kneel, creation, whisperings, fists, precise. )

  1. This is such a beautiful account of having a new pet in the house and the maternal feelings that it invokes.

  3. I love this! Reminds me of when we got our second puppy! She was so small I followed her around outside afraid she would slip under the fence!

  5. This is a beautiful tribute to a puppy. I love it, Veronica. We just lost one of our older dogs a couple of weeks ago. This piece is healing for me. Thank you. Licking dew from a leaf is a great detail to draw us closer to earth.

  6. Veronica, I love this tribute to your puppy. I am a huge animal lover myself. We have 4 dogs, a cat and a bird, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
